Mt 11:20-24
20[Jesus] began to reproach the towns where most of his mighty deeds had been done, since they had not repented.21“Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty deeds done in your midst had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would long ago have repented in sackcloth and ashes. 22But I tell you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you. 23And as for you, Capernaum: ‘Will you be exalted to heaven?/ You will go down to the netherworld.’ For if the mighty deeds done in your midst had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. 24But I tell you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.”
Reflection:
He began to reproach the towns. Jesus must feel very disappointed with some of the towns that do not believe in him in spite of the many miracles performed for them. Jesus begins to reproach the towns since they have not repented. He must be shaking his head with a sigh: “When will they ever learn?”
Indeed, we never learn. The only real mistakes in life are those we do not learn from. We are told to respect the environment; yet, we continue to ravish and disrespect her unto destruction. We know that vices can ruin us; yet we continue to lap up our vices even if they are destroying our families. We never learn that there is a higher reality over us, far wiser and far more powerful, to whom we must bow. We never learn and we continue to defy our God. Woe to us who do not learn from our mistakes.
