The Greatest Commandment

Mt 22:34-40
34When the Pharisees heard that [Jesus] had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, 35and one of them [a scholar of the law] tested him by asking, 36“Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?” 37He said to him, “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. 38This is the greatest and the first commandment. 39The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.”

Reflection:

Which commandment in the law is the greatest? The greatest is Jesus. He is the only one to summarize the whole law into the law of love. He advances morality when he proclaims the love of God as being measured by love of neighbor. He lives out this law and brings it close to our hearts: he identifies God as a close Father and considers everyone his worthy neighbor. He embodies love and lives it. That is the greatest commandment.

The jungle has a different law: survival of the fittest. The corporate world has its own: No guts, no glory. Politics declares: Off with the people, buy the people, and fool the people. Our faith proclaims: Love! Everything is love. There is no other way and no other law.

I saw this message in a poster: Everything is law—Moses. Everything is money—Marx. Everything is relative—Einstein. Everything is sex—Freud. Everything is love—Jesus!

What/who is the greatest in your heart?
Take this little test.
Give the first answer that comes to mind:
If you have extra time, with whom will you spend it?
If you have extra money, to whom will you give it?
If you have good news, who will be the first person you’ll share it with?
