The Call of Nathanael

Jn 1:45-51
45Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one about whom Moses wrote in the law, and also the prophets, Jesus son of Joseph, from Nazareth.” 46But Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come from Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” 47Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, “Here is a true Israelite. There is no duplicity in him.”

48Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree.” 49Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel.” 50Jesus answered and said to him, “Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than this.” 51And he said to him, “Amen, amen, I say to you, you will see the sky opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”

Reflection:

You will see greater things than this. Jesus seems to tell Nathanael, “You ain’t seen nothin’ yet!” There are more things in this world than what we can see and experience. More blessings await those who totally trust in the Lord. There is so much to learn and discover. Let us not be contented with what we have at the moment and rest on our laurels.

When I reached middle age, I thought I had enough and it would be downhill from there. But I was surprised by the new learning and the new perspective I discovered and at the new roles my soul and body were opening for me.

Our God is a God of surprises. God continues to astonish us every day. Ours is also a God of delight. God must enjoy it when creation turns up something new. God must be amused at our stumbling discoveries.

Do not be afraid to try new things, to push your generosity further, to extend your kindness beyond the natural, and to push your patience for an extra period. Let us tell God that “he ain’t seen nothin’ yet” of our God-given capacity to love and care. Let us challenge our own goodness.

Do an extra act of charity today.
