Lk 6:39-42
39[Jesus told his disciples] a parable, “Can a blind person guide a blind person? Will not both fall into a pit? 40No disciple is superior to the teacher; but when fully trained, every disciple will be like his teacher. 41Why do you notice the splinter in your brother’s eye, but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own? 42How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me remove that splinter in your eye,’ when you do not even notice the wooden beam in your own eye? You hypocrite! Remove the wooden beam from your eye first; then you will see clearly to remove the splinter in your brother’s eye.”
Reflection:
Can a blind person guide a blind person? Jesus poses this question and also gives the answer. We all have splinters in our own eyes. Our view is colored by bias and personal baggage. So how can we be natural guides and neutral observers? When we do not consider our self higher than any teacher, when we regard others as equals, when we notice the splinter in the other’s eye while at the same time admitting the wooden beam in our own eyes, we can be guides for one another.
It is said that we are all angels. The problem is that we each have only one wing. So we can fly only by holding on to one another.
