Lk 9:7-9
7Herod the tetrarch heard about all that [Jesus was doing], and he was greatly perplexed because some were saying, “John has been raised from the dead”; 8others were saying, “Elijah has appeared”; still others, “One of the ancient prophets has arisen.” 9But Herod said, “John I beheaded. Who then is this about whom I hear such things?” And he kept trying to see him.
Reflection:
John I beheaded. Who then is this? Our guilt will always follow and haunt us. “Greatly perplexed” are kind words to describe Herod’s uneasiness and restlessness. And this “ghost” does not come from the outside. It comes from within us—our conscience that scares and haunts us.
“He kept trying to see him,” the passage says. Herod seeks Jesus. We cannot run away from the evil that we have done. We can only confront it, confess it, make right what needs to be done, and do the necessary penance.
Be kind to those who love you.
