The Greatest in the Kingdom

Lk 9:46-50
46An argument arose among the disciples about which of them was the greatest. 47Jesus realized the intention of their hearts and took a child and placed it by his side 48and said to them, “Whoever receives this child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me. For the one who is least among all of you is the one who is the greatest.”

49Then John said in reply, “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow in our company.” 50Jesus said to him, “Do not prevent him, for whoever is not against you is for you.”

Reflection:

An argument arose among the disciples. How does Jesus resolve the debate and quiet the argument? He does not side with anyone. He does not scold, rebuke, or shame any of his disciples. He offers an alternative and makes them decide by themselves. He proposes an answer and leaves them to think for themselves.

We love debates. We enjoy answering back. We take pride in our arguments. We love to see an opponent shamed or cut to pieces. This is not Jesus’ way. We have good points and positions. We only need to move a little or give in a bit. God has a big heart, and we can all be accommodated. There is no need to protect our side when everyone else is neighbor and friend.

Do not argue with an opponent today, especially with your spouse!
