Water: After the cured man has been interrogated by the Jewish officials, Jesus finds him in the Temple; evidently the man has gone there to give thanks.
The cured man does not seem to know much of what has gone on, other than that he has been cured. Jesus admonishes him to avoid sin. That is the end of the miracle, but this sign is a great deal more than a cure.
There is the symbolism of water. Water symbolizes great blessings—life for people and for all living things. Water has the double effect of destroying and delivering.
At creation God’s Holy Spirit breathed on the waters, making them the wellspring of holiness. The deluge (Gn 6-9) destroyed the wicked but delivered Noah and his family. The Red Sea (Ex 14) delivered God’s people by destroying their pursuing persecutors. In the waters of the Jordan Jesus was baptized. Water and blood flowed from Jesus’ side as he hung upon the cross. At Baptism we are reminded that God has made water a rich symbol of the grace he gives us.
