Jn 21:1-14

Breakfast: Jesus’ action as he gives bread and fish to the disciples suggests: First, that Jesus Risen continues to be present in the celebration of the Eucharistic Bread (Lk 24:35). Second, by setting this encounter with his disciples at a breakfast, the evangelist emphasizes that Jesus alive and risen manifests his continuing presence in the joys and peace of the ordinary intimacies of daily life. By his actions, Jesus reiterates an earlier teaching: “I am among you as one who serves” (Lk 22:27). And so when the disciples hear Jesus say, “Come, have breakfast,” they realize it is the Lord (v 12). To this day, a life of service is an important way of witnessing to our faith in the Risen Jesus (Jn 13:14).
