The Spirit of Truth

Jn 16:12-15

The Spirit of truth: Jesus comes as the revealer of the Father, but his ministry is too brief for the disciples to take in all that has to be made known. After his departure, “the Spirit of truth” (Jn 14:16-17) will carry out the ministry of revelation. Jesus, the embodiment of truth (Jn 14:6), has introduced the disciples to the way of truth. The Spirit will not disclose truth beyond that which is in Jesus (Eph 4:21). Rather, he will guide them farther along the way and continue unfolding this truth.

Jesus has always insisted that he does not speak or act on his own initiative; his words are those which the Father has given him (Jn 5:19, 30). Neither will the Spirit speak on his own initiative. He has no message other than that which is implicit in the incarnate Word. His function is to make that message explicit. He will teach the disciples everything (Jn 14:26); he will bear witness to Christ (Jn 15:26), he will guide the disciples in the way of truth (Jn 16:13). His supreme mission is the glorification of Jesus.

As the Son has glorified the Father, so the Spirit will glorify the Son. And since the Father has given him all things, what the Spirit discloses to the disciples is everything that the Father has. In making known the Son, the Spirit makes known the Father who is revealed in the Son.
