Lk 12:39-48
Who is waiting: The passage begins with an exhortation concerning perpetual preparedness. Luke then portrays Peter as asking, “Lord, is this parable meant for us or for everyone?” (v 41). Peter represents those who have leadership roles in the Church. Jesus exhorts those in such roles to be faithful and prudent stewards.
Luke also addresses himself to those leaders who act irresponsibly during the delay of the Second Coming of Jesus. The irresponsible leader will be punished by the master in proportion to the degree of his irresponsibility. The servant who abandons all imminent expectation of the return of Jesus will be punished severely.
The leaders of Luke’s community are exhorted to be more prepared for the Second Coming of Jesus than other Christians. Their preparedness is their faithfulness in fulfilling the mission given them by the master, Jesus.
