Mt 9:27-31
27As Jesus passed [by], two blind men followed [him], crying out, “Son of David, have pity on us!” 28When he entered the house, the blind men approached him and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I can do this?” “Yes, Lord,” they said to him. 29Then he touched their eyes and said, “Let it be done for you according to your faith.” 30And their eyes were opened. Jesus warned them sternly, “See that no one knows about this.” 31But they went out and spread word of him through all that land.
Reflection
According to your faith: Jesus and his disciples resume their journey to Capernaum. He has just brought a little girl back to life (Mt 9:18-25) and a crowd must have joined his retinue. Suddenly, the noisy throng catches the attention of two blind men, who start following Jesus. And when he enters a house, they approach him. How could the blind follow Jesus on the street and into the house? Matthew does not go into details, but proceeds to the heart of the story: Jesus restores the vision of the two men.
The afflicted men find out somehow that it is Jesus who is passing near them. They recognize who he is and cry out to him in their great need, “Son of David, have pity on us!” (v 27). And then they follow him into the house. This implies a priori knowledge or “sight” of Jesus, without which they could not even have guessed the significance of the commotion they heard. But because they have faith, they are open to God’s grace. Guided by their hearts, they follow what their sense of hearing tells them. Their faith leads to their healing, and this Jesus himself acknowledges: “Let it be done for you according to your faith” (v 29).
