Mk 9:38-40
38John said to [Jesus], “Teacher, we saw someone driving out demons in your name, and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow us.” 39Jesus replied, “Do not prevent him. There is no one who performs a mighty deed in my name who can at the same time speak ill of me. 40For whoever is not against us is for us.”
We tried to prevent him because he does not follow us: We often divide our world between those who agree with us and those who do not, define people as against us or for us, and understand things as inside or outside. It is always either-or.
But sometimes there are no clear dividing lines. There are shades of gray between black and white. Things that are against us in the end turn up for us. The people we hate become the people who love us. Our tormentors challenge and teach us best.
Go easy on judging. Learn to wait and understand. Always believe in happy endings. If it is not happy, it is not yet the ending!
