Jn 4:5-42 (or 4:5-15, 19b-26, 39a, 40-42)
Jacob's well was there. There are many encounters in the Scriptures where the setting is the well. One feature of a well is its depth. In the Gospel, Jesus is talking of deep things with the Samaritan woman. But she replies with a very shallow understanding of things. Jesus speaks of life-giving water. The woman wants a ready drink for every day so that she will not need to go and draw water from the well.
Jesus offers a deep truth to the woman and to us: Do not live in lies. Do not hide in the heat of high noon. Go out into the light. Worship God in Spirit and truth.
Just because one had a past does not mean one no longer has a future. Just because one made mistakes does not mean one can no longer be loved. Many people have risen from their failures and mistakes and have become better and more loving persons! It just takes one person who believes in them and loves them for what they are.
