Jn 16:12-15
[Jesus said to his disciples,] 12“I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now. 13But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth. He will not speak on his own, but he will speak what he hears, and will declare to you the things that are coming. 14He will glorify me, because he will take from what is mine and declare it to you. 15Everything that the Father has is mine; for this reason I told you that he will take from what is mine and declare it to you.”
I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now. Jesus teaches his apostles, but they often cannot understand him. An author was asked how he would summarize the teachings of Jesus, and he answered: “You got me all wrong!” The people in his time think that he is just a carpenter’s son, or that he should be their political leader, or that he is Elijah. They get Jesus all wrong.
What if we, too, are getting Jesus all wrong? We still do not understand his command to offer the other cheek, to forgive seventy times seven, to be last, or to serve. We expect him to give everything we pray and ask for. We just cannot bear this Jesus.
But Jesus does not give up on us. He has the help of the Holy Spirit who will push us to take the radical freedom of Jesus, of giving everything up, and of surrendering to his peace.
